Things I Talk About

I began strumming chords from several different songs aimlessly, having them all run through my head and as I was thinking of a good song to record and cover. I blew my hair out of my face while continued playing parts from several different songs, knowing this could take a little while.
A few minutes later, I realized I was starting to play through one song. I smiled as I tried to remember the way the song was played with all the other band members. I could play this with the actual song playing in the background, like all the other cover artists out there, I thought jokingly. I got up out of the chair I had been sitting in and crossed my room to set up all the equipment.
I plugged in to the amp and set the guitar down, put up my new mic, and started setting up the recording software. I always find it easier when I’m not dealing with video as well as audio at the same time, so I didn’t bother to set up my camera. Damn, I need to cut my hair, I thought as I blew it out of my face again. My bangs were way longer then they used to be, so I look like a try hard skater kid with this shaggy mess of brown hair. I had pulled out my phone during my mental rant to check the lyrics, and I shook those thoughts out my head, and my hair out of my face, and reviewed the lyrics I would be singing.
I practiced singing the lyrics of “In the Mouth of Madness” - I forgot I had to do screams and growl as well, awesome - as I tuned my guitar again. I hadn’t done so in a few days, and it would help make it sound better if I did.
After that was done, I took a deep breath in and slowly released it. “All right, let’s do this.” I also have a bad habit of talking to my guitar like it’s a bandmate or something.
I cleared my throat, made sure the recording software was running and I started playing the first few notes. “I can see the light, even though I can’t reach it. But I know, yeah, I know, one day, my world will change.” There’s a few notes before I have to starting doing the uncleans as well as playing the harsher sounds.
“Standing on the edge of the world, I can see everything from across the distance. Never finding anything but a lie then I realized I was wrong the whole time. I've been the one to hold me back from what I could become. I've been deceiving myself from the truth.” And back to the softer, more melodic part.
“I can see the light, even though I can't reach it, but I know, yeah I know, one day, my world will change.” A few seconds of playing is what leads into the uncleans again.
“I'll go it alone (here I pause for a split second) I'll go it alone. Because I'm standing on the edge of the world. I can see everything from across the distance, proving once and for all that I can bend the storm and stand on my own.” I have to pause while, in the actual song, the person who does the clean vocals sings. “I was face down in the dirt, I was face down for so long.”
After this part, the beat becomes more consistent. “I can see the light, even though I can’t reach it. But I know, yeah, I know, one day, my world will change. And I can see the light, even though I can't reach it, so I hold my breath and wait for my world to change.”
This is the last set of uncleans, as well as the one that has the harsher screams. “If you're looking for answers, start asking questions. ‘Cause you will never go back to what you were, so engrave this in your mind. Engrave this in your mind!” The cleans coming up are what I’m going to finish the song with.
“I can see the light, even though I can’t reach it. But I know, yeah, I know, one day, my world will change. I can see the light, even though I can’t reach it. But I know, yeah, I know, one day, my world will change. And I can see the light, even though I can’t reach it. So I hold my breath and wait for my world to change. Yeah, I hold my breath and wait for my world to change. Whoa, whoa. I know you can, I know you can change. I know you can, I know you can change.”
Wasn’t too bad of a run through actually. I turned off the software and moved the mic away from my. I unplugged my amp. “Alright, now let’s see how it sounds and see what I want to do with it…”
